Periodontitis is the most prominent gum disease and is often incurable. However, the right treatment at the right time can help reduce its severity and control the spread of the infection. We offer periodontal therapy as a treatment for periodontitis, which includes procedures such as removal of infected tissues, scaling and root planing, gum graft, and prescribing suitable medication to counter the microbes.

Periodontitis initially starts as a minor infection of the gums, which can be seen as inflammation, redness, and results in pain when you bite and chew food or brush the teeth. At this stage, it is called gingivitis. Ideally, the condition can be treated and cured in this stage. If left untreated for a significant period, the condition worsens, and the symptoms become more severe. The symptoms of periodontitis are:

• Bleeding and redness of gums
• Decaying tissues
• Receding gum line
• Deeper gum pockets where microbes and food debris can accumulate
• Discharge of pus
• Jawbone deterioration
• Root canal infection
• Loosening of teeth from their sockets
• Tooth loss

The microbes in the mouth multiply throughout the day and get deposited in the form of plaque. Hence, we suggest our patients brush and floss their teeth at least twice a day to eliminate them. When plaque isn’t removed effectively, it forms tartar deposits near the gum line and at the intersection of two teeth. They release harmful toxins, which can erode the enamel and cause cavities and decay of the surrounding gum tissues. In some instances, external trauma to the gums can also cause gum diseases.

Scaling and root planing: Scaling and root planing are the processes of removing the adhered plaque and tartar from the teeth and root surfaces. This is carried out using an ultrasonic scaling device with a metal tip that vibrates at ultrasonic frequencies. They are known to provide significant relief from gum diseases.

Infected tissue removal: Infected gum tissues will be removed using a highly intense beam of the laser. With laser therapy, there wouldn’t be any need for incision or sutures to cover the wounds. Also, bleeding is eliminated as the wounds are instantly sealed.

Gum graft: Healthy soft tissues are extracted from a different part of the mouth, preferably the palate. They will be grafted to the receded and decayed area, thereby replenishing its volume.

Medication: Highly powerful antibiotic medication, such as Arestin, will be prescribed by the dentist. They can be in the form of oral pills or surface applicants that are placed under the gums.
