Conventional or in-office teeth whitening is the most commonly preferred type of whitening. When patients visit our dental practice to get whiter teeth, we conduct a thorough diagnosis and determine whether they are suitable candidates. Some of the factors we consider are the presence of restorations, cavities, receding gum lines, etc.
The dentist cleans the teeth and removes any tartar deposits that could be present on their surface. A rubber dam will be placed on them to cover the gums and the exposed root surfaces. The dentist applies a suitable whitening gel on the teeth and spreads it evenly. The gel liberates oxygen molecules that penetrate the porous surface of the teeth and bleach the staining particles. The gel will be rinsed off after a few minutes, which leaves your teeth looking whiter. The procedure can be repeated multiple times, depending on the severity of the staining and the whitening level you want to have.
Teeth whitening can be carried out in the comfort of your home as well. When you visit us for the consultation, we will thoroughly diagnose your teeth and determine your candidacy for the procedure. The dentist will use a hand-held scanning device to scan your teeth and create a digital impression. It will be sent to a dental laboratory, where customized whitening trays will be fabricated from a dental-grade plastic material.
Once they are finished and available for use, the dentist will hand them to you along with a prescribed whitening gel. You can take the whitening kit home and use it at your convenience. Before wearing the trays, make sure you brush your teeth thoroughly to remove any food particles or adhered debris. Squeeze a small amount of whitening gel in each compartment of the tray, and spread it evenly. Place it on your teeth and leave it for a few minutes, after which you can rinse it off. Repeat the process according to the staining and the recommendation of the dentist.
